Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a form of therapy that uses gentle light touches to improve the movement of cerebrospinal fluids in the body. When this fluid is allowed to flow correctly in the body, it helps to release tension in the head, neck, and lower back.
During craniosacral therapy, the therapist gently applies pressure to the skull (cranium) and sacrum (bone in the lower back), hence the name craniosacral therapy. Sometimes the area around the spinal column is also used.
Who should consider craniosacral therapy?
Anyone can achieve great benefits from craniosacral therapy. However, individuals with the following condition should especially consider getting the therapy:
- Headaches and migraines
- Sinus infections
- Insomnia
- TMJ
- Neck pain
- Lower back pain
- Anxiety and stress
- Ear infections in infants
How does craniosacral therapy work?
There’s a huge amount of information out there about Craniosacral therapy. In a nutshell, it works by unblocking the path taken by the cerebrospinal fluid in the body.
The cerebrospinal fluid helps deliver nutrients and remove waste from the central nervous system. By improving its flow, these functions are improved resulting in faster healing.
By reducing compression in the head, neck, and back, CST also prevents and treats both emotional and physical tension in the body.

What happens during a craniosacral therapy session?
Some of our therapists at Rub have skills in CST, so you may find they bring some of their experience into a Remedial Massage session.
Craniosacral techniques can be utilised for a complete session, or can be a complementary technique as part of a remedial massage session.
Your therapist will likely place their hands on your scalp and at the base of your skull (incredibly relaxing) and work gently and slowly with you.
Our most popular session is 60mins, and in general when your goal is to reduce tension and musculoskeletal dysfunction, it can take 3 to 5 sessions to feel a noticeable difference depending on how severe your condition is/was.
If you suffer from unexplained tension or pain in your head, back, and pelvic (hip) area, book an appointment now to meet our team and, CST might just help to address the underlying problem behind your pain.
